Sustainable development goals (SDGs) adressed in the project

The project 'Climate change and ecosystems management in Malawi and Tanzania' for research and cooperation between Norwegian and African researchers/partners meets five of the 17 goals for sustainable development defined by United Nations.

UN states that: "The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future. At its heart are the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are an urgent call for action by all countries - developed and developing - in a global partnership." The SDGs addressed in this project

The main goal of the 'Climate change and ecosystems management in Malawi and Tanzania' project is to generate scientific knowledge and understanding of the state of environment and the expected impacts of climate change and local anthropogenic activities on Hydro-biogeochemical processes in The Zambezi River Basin (ZRB). – ZRB is the most important water basin in Southern Africa.

The ZRB facing increased risk of water shortages due to impacts of climate change and increased population. The Hydro-biogeochemical processes are governing the amount and quality of water resources in fragile ecosystems in and around the basin and the associated socio-economic consequences in Malawi and Tanzania.

This project is designed to address the capacity shortfalls using a blend of natural science and social sciences to understand the ZRB ecosystem, under the SDGs:
