Glacier mass changes and impacts on sea level or streamflow based on modeling, remote sensing and/or machine learning

Glaciers are retreating and thinning worldwide with major implications for sea level and streamflow.

Master projects are available that assess glacier changes using suitable models. For example, you can use the global glacier model PyGEM (written in Python) which has been developed to simulate glacier mass and runoff changes of entire glacier regions based on temperature and precipitation data.

Master projects are available that model glacier mass changes for various purposes of interest and in any glacier area of interest.

You can for example do glacier mass and runoff projections over the next century, reconstruct mass balances for the past, investigate the effect of using different input data sets, relate mass changes to changes in ice flow, assess the effect of debris cover on glaciers on melt, analyse the effect of glacier changes on seasonal and annual runoff, or improve the model etc. The exact topic can be adjusted to your interest.

You will gain experience in combining modeling with measured and/or remote sensing data. As part of a new ERC grant by the European Union focused on glacier mass balance modeling we will work towards improving the modeling using machine learning. You can also contribute to these efforts.
