Simulations of permafrost processes with CryoGrid

CryoGrid is an open-source permafrost model with a user and developer community in more than five countries. CryoGrid has a modular structure with different submodules for the ground, the snow, and water bodies (each with different physics/parametrizations) which can be flexibly combined with each other. At the same time, it is possible to simulate two and three-dimensional configurations, so that complex landscape dynamics in thawing permafrost can be reproduced (see for example www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-15725-8).

The most used CryoGrid version is programmed in Matlab, and with good programming skills, a range of different master projects can be realized. See also projects: (Changes in NDVI and) permafrost in Mongolia; Permafrost changes below cultural heritage sites in Svalbard; Permafrost peatlands in Finnmark; Environmental factors controlling ground temperatures in permafrost around Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Furthermore, we can design more method-focused projects with CryoGrid, for example on data assimilation or machine learning in CryoGrid.
