TRAINS conference

In recognition of Prof. Trygve Helgaker's 70th birthday, this years meeting of Theory and Modelling chapter of the Norwegian Chemical Society will be a scientific conference in his honor.

TRAINS

The TRAINS conference is a celebration of Trygve's Adventures in Science. Prof. Helgaker is the most cited chemist in Norway. During his long career, he has made numerous scientific contributions to electronic structure theory and established many international collaborations. He has mentored many students and, by leading two centers of excellence, built up a strong Norwegian computational chemistry environment. The Hylleraas Centre and the Norwegian Chemical Society celebrates these contributions by turning the regular annual meeting into an international scientific conference marking Prof. Helgaker's 70th birthday.

Date

The event will take place on November 27-30, 2023. It begins at noon on November 27 and ends around noon on November 30.

Location and venue

The conference will take place at Sundvolden Hotel, which is located about 40 km from central Oslo.

Norwegian Chemical Society membership

Chemists working in Norway, who are not already NKS members, should register for membership.

Registration

All participants need to register before September 30. The normal registration is now closed and hotel room availability can no longer be guaranteed. If you still want to sign up, write an email to erik.tellgren [at] kjemi.uio.no.

Note that hotel rooms at Sundvolden will be booked for you based the arrival and departure dates specified. Note also that there is no registration fee for this conference; however, the participants need to pay for their own hotel rooms (see registration form for details).

Program

The conference begins with lunch at 12:30 on November 27 and ends at 14:00 on November 30. The program is available here (PDF file).

A tentative Book of Abstracts (will be updated later!) is available here (PDF file).

Travel instructions

From airport to central Oslo

  • By airport train: Take the airport express train (Flytoget) to the Oslo central railway station (Oslo S).
  • By bus: Take the airport bus (Flybussen) to Jernbanetorget.

From central Oslo to Hotel Sundvolden

The easiest way to get to Sundvolden (also spelled Sundvollen) is by bus from the Oslo bus terminal. The Oslo central railway station (Oslo S) and the metro station named Jernbanetorget are part of the same building complex. One floor up relative to the railway track platforms is Byporten shopping mall and in its north-east corner is an outdoor walking bridge that leads to the Oslo bus terminal building. A good landmark for users of Google Maps, which tends to suggest longer routes not utilizing the bridge, is the amusingly named Cafe Fiasco, located at the end of the walking bridge.

  • From the Oslo bus terminal: Take bus number 200 towards Hønefoss, get off at the bus stop named Sundvollen E16. The bus departs every half hour.
  • From the central railway station: Take train to Sandvika. From Sandvika train station, walk 300 meters to Sandvika bus terminal and take bus number 200. Get off at the stop named Sundvollen E16.

Direct shuttle bus airport - Sundvolden

A direct shuttle bus FB20 goes between the airport and central Sundvolden, which is 250 meters from Hotel Sundvolden. However, be sure to check the timetable (click here for PDF) before relying on this option as the service is infrequent. On weekdays, it departs four times a day from the airport (at 8:10, 12:00, 15:50, and 20:00). On sundays, it departs only twice (at 15:50 and 20:00).

Direct taxi

Taxi is generally expensive. There are multiple pricing models, but for reference Hønefoss Taxi offers a fixed price for the distance Sundvolden - airport.

Sponsors

Aker Scholarship (Norwegian homepage here) has generously agreed to sponsor the event, in addition to the support by the Norwegian Chemical Society and the Hylleraas Centre. The scientific journal Molecular Physics (Taylor & Francis) generously sponsors a lecture: the Molecular Physics lecture by Poul Jørgensen. We are also grateful for the support by the MN Faculty.
