Title: Radical Pathways in Organometallic Chemistry: A Mechanistic Picture

Abstract: Despite spin state changes occur often in organometallic chemistry, radical-type reactivity of organometallic complexes is a relatively unexplored field. However, combining a redox non-innocent ligand/substrate/additive with the suitable transition metal center can promote radical formation. Then, these radicals can open new pathways in well-known reactions or can even trigger new reactions. The current interest in using first-row transition metals in catalysis that can be involved in one- electron reaction steps fosters mechanistic studies of radical pathways.

Radical reactivity is challenging. From the experimental side selectivity issues hamper its use as a synthetic route. From the theoretical side, even though its conceptual basis are well established, it tests our ability to predict the relative energetics of spin states.

In the lecture recent computational studies of organometallic reaction mechanism, performed by the group, showing unexpected radical pathways will be presented, highlighting the main challenges these studies face with.
