The Prince Albert I Grand Medal

The Prince Albert I Grand Medal is the most prestigious prize awarded by The Oceanographic Institute in Monaco. Each year, it recognizes the most prominent international figures in the marine world in the fields of science and communication. The prize itself is a gilded bronze medal featuring the embossed profile of Prince Albert I, a pioneer in modern oceanography and the founder of the institute.

It is a great honor that Professor Nils Chr. Stenseth has been awarded The Prince Albert I Grand Medal, Science Section 2023 by The Oceanographic Institute in Monaco. This prestigious prize acknowledges his outstanding contributions to the fields of ecology, theoretical and evolutionary biology, and global change biology.

Recognition for lifelong contributions to marine science

Professor Stenseth's work in integrating different sub-disciplines to address fundamental biological and environmental questions has advanced our understanding of the complexities of the marine system and the consequences of climate change on our planet. His exceptional knowledge of scientific theory and data, combined with his ability to integrate diverse fields of research, has led to innovative insights in marine ecology and evolutionary biology.

Professor Stenseth's research on pests and infectious diseases has also made significant contributions to global health. His work in understanding disease transmission and its impact on human populations has highlighted the importance of environmental factors in disease spread. His dedication to science and its extensive societal implications has been crucial in promoting the protection and conservation of our oceans and the life they support.

By receiving this award, Professor Stenseth joins a group of marine scientists who have been recognized for their lifelong contributions to the field of marine science. This award speaks to his unique contributions to the field of marine ecology and evolutionary biology, as well as his exceptional ability to communicate important science to the public.

Professor Stenseth believes that being a scientist is not only about knowledge and discoveries, but also about standing up for the importance of solid science and discussing its extensive societal implications - something he pursues through a wide range of media, both nationally and internationally.

World-leading Professor in Ecology and Biology

Nils Chr. Stenseth is a Professor of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Oslo and a Professor of Marine Biology at the University of Agder. At the University of Oslo, he founded the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES). He was also involved in establishing the Centre for Coastal Research (CCR) at the University of Agder.

Professor Stenseth is a world-leading ecologist and evolutionary biologist and is one of the lead authors of the Sixth IPCC report released in 2022. He has published over 800 scientific papers and given talks and invited lectures all over the world.

Stenseth has received several awards and honors, including Chevalier of the French National Order of Legion of Honor, Einstein Professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Chinese President's (Xi Jinping) International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.

Niels Chr. Stenseth is a member of several scientific societies, including the French Academy of Sciences, the Royal Society of Canada, the National Academy of Sciences (Washington DC), Academia Europaea, the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Stenseth is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, where he has also served as president. He has served as president of the International Biological Union (IUBS) and is currently president of the International Society for Zoological Sciences (ISZS).
