The Beamforming Academy

The Beamforming Academy

Plato's Academy

According to chatGPT: "An academy is a school or institution for the study of a particular subject or group of subjects, typically at a secondary or higher education level. It can also refer to a society or organization that promotes a particular field of study or arts. Additionally, it can refer to a group of experts in a specific field who advise or make recommendations on matters related to their area of expertise." And thus, we need a beamforming academy!

Beamforming is the ability to focus signals in certain directions and toward certain points both on transmission and reception. Beamforming is the backbone processing technique of radar, sonar and ultrasound imaging. Norway is in the forefront of beamforming research, especially in medical ultrasound imaging and sonar imaging. The ultrasound industry in Norway is also world leading with a forefront in medical ultrasound imaging through GE Vingmed Ultrasound and in SONAR through Kongsberg Martime. Most of this activity is joint together in CIUS, the Center for Innovative Ultrasound Solutions.

This academy is a bi-weekly gathering to discuss details regarding beamforming whether you are imaging inside the body, under water, in the air or elsewhere. The goal of this session is to have a forum to discuss common issues and problems related to beamforming especially for those using the UltraSound ToolBox (https://www.ustb.no). The goal of this academy is that it should be an informal forum with a low treshold allowing preliminary results and trivial questions related to beamforming and signal processing.

We meet in the DSB-lab in Ole Johan Dahls Hus at UiO on every second Wednesday at 9am. However – it will be possible to join a Teams meeting for those preferring a remote location.
