The main interest of this PhD project was to improve the process of aluminium extrusion. Extrusion is a forming process to manufacture straight profiles of fixed cross section. The main use of the aluminium sections is in building industry, aeronautics, marine, automotive, etc. The automotive industry is especially very demanding when it comes to the geometrical and mechanical tolerances. Manufacturing profiles with better tolerances will contribute in a more efficient down stream industry, and an insight into the physics of this forming process should lead to an increase in productivity and tighter tolerances.
Well established mathematical method of numerical analysis was used in this project. Modelling of a forming process with numerical analysis is fast and cost effective, and in this way one can actually simulate the real process and fine tune different parameters in a computer before applying new methods in the extrusion plant.
This PhD thesis was focused on three specific areas, each of them published in a scientific journal paper.
