Main research findings

  • In the digital age, protecting our privacy has become paramount. This thesis delves into privacy and data protection within the realm of identity and access management, with a particular focus on biometric systems and password-based authentication. Initially, it evaluates Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA) frameworks—a tool meant to identify privacy risks and safeguard our fundamental rights. The study discerned that some existing methods exhibit weaknesses, especially when used for sector-specific applications. Secondly, it revealed that these weaknesses often originate from gaps present in the regulatory framework, specifically impacting risks related to new biometric technologies. Finally, a novel protocol was introduced to test password security without risking data or privacy leaks, a development that has the potential to revolutionize security audits. Consequently, this research not only highlights existing vulnerabilities but also charts a path towards enhanced privacy measures. Its insights are relevant for anyone engaged in data protection, ranging from businesses to individual users, in a world where digital identity is an integral part of life. In essence, by comprehending and addressing these challenges, our digital realm can transform into a safer and more privacy-centric environment.
