Main research findings

Smart home systems that recognize and monitor human activity can be particularly beneficial for older adults with care needs, as they can assist with tasks, monitor emergencies, and provide companionship. However, many published research studies on such systems miss to address privacy concerns adequately.

The goal of this thesis is to contribute to the development of activity recognition systems that minimize the collection of personal information. In order to achieve this, the study evaluates sensors from a privacy perspective, applies cutting-edge deep learning algorithms, and investigates how to merge data from multiple sensors. Moreover, the system's performance was enhanced by introducing multiple representations of a single sensor's data.

Noori’s dissertation shows that it is possible to achieve good accuracy in activity recognition while still protecting privacy. Thus, the developed technology is likely adequate for contributing to systems assisting healthcare personnel and caregivers in their work by indicating current activity status and, by measuring activity levels, providing alerts about abnormal activities. The findings of this dissertation contribute to the development of more effective and privacy-conscious smart home systems for elderly care.
