Main research findings

For over two decades, computer-aided systems have played a crucial role in planning liver resection surgeries. The liver's complex network of blood vessels makes it challenging to remove tumors accurately while preserving essential tissue. This PhD research addresses the key obstacles in virtual resection planning and offers innovative, patient-specific solutions to support decision-making and enhance surgical precision.

This thesis contributes three major advancements. First, it introduces advanced liver and tumor segmentation techniques using deep learning models, essential for creating precise resection plans. Second, it presents a new classification method for liver anatomy, which integrates both hepatic and portal veins to better align with surgical perspectives. Third, it develops novel algorithms that generate quick and accurate resection plans, even for complex cases involving multiple tumors. These plans are designed to be easily modifiable by surgeons, bridging the gap between computational models and real-life surgery.

Furthermore, this work highlights the technological limitations and challenges faced, paving the way for future research. The goal is to further integrate computational planning with practical surgical execution in liver surgery, ultimately leading to more precise and reliable procedures, improving patient outcomes and surgical efficiency.
