Main research findings
Text data can be found everywhere, often containing personal information that's challenging to de-identify effectively. It is often the case that while trying to protect such information, the text loses its usefulness or the information is not protected to an appropriate degree. Our work addresses this important task of protecting individuals' privacy and personal information in relation to text data, as also required by regulations like the GDPR. We developed innovative techniques to detect personally identifiable information and assess the privacy risk of this information within a text document. The results can contribute to the enhancement of data privacy in various domains such as legal publishing or medical archives, by offering practical solutions to the problem of protecting the identity of an individual, while also preserving the utility of textual data. Ultimately, our findings aim not only to align with privacy regulations but also to promote responsible and ethical data handling practices in a data-driven society.
