Energy Systems Modelling Group

About the group

Our primary research focus to support the transition to sustainable future energy systems that meet the Paris Agreement Goal. We therefore develop and use energy system models with a focus on systems with high shares of variable renewable energy source (i.e. wind and solar energy).  Among other things, we are currently exploring the inter-annual variability of weather, designing systems that are weather and climate resilient, the role of seasonal storage using hydrogen and hydropower as well as social acceptance and socially just energy systems.

Academic programs and courses

Our researchers are closely involved in teaching activities and developing the Renewable Energy Systems Master's Programme at ITS for which we received UiO's educational price 2022

We are responsible for TEK5350 – Energy Markets and Regulation and which provides students with the basics of energy markets, both physical and financial, starting with the classical markets like day-ahead electricity market and then continuing to the markets specific for renewable energy resources as well as TEK5340 – Energy Systems Analysis: Modelling, Methods and Scenarios.

If you are interested in doing your master thesis within the field of energy systems modelling, or have an idea which you think is relevant to our work, please contact us via e-mail.

Resources

One of the tools that we use and develop is the open-source power system model 'high spatial and temporal Resolution Electricity System model', (highRES-Europe) with a higher resolution of Norway.  The current working version of highRES-Europe, including all GAMS code and necessary text files/GDX format input data for a 8760 hour model run, is available on GitHub
