In this talk, I will discuss the fundamental principles of quantum optics. The focus will be on developing some intuitive understanding of the concepts rather than on the mathematical formalism. First, we will look at the premise of quantum optics and attempt to answer the basic questions: What does it mean for light to be quantized and what is a photon? Second, we will see how quantization gives rise to differences from the classical theory and highlight three key concepts in quantum optics: photon statistics, subsystem correlations and measurement collapse.
