General HSE information

All students, employees, guest and tenants at the Department of Chemistry are to familiarize themselves with the Department's HSE procedures and regulations.

Getting started at the Department of Chemistry

All students, employees and guests have to take part in mandatory HSE training. B.Sc. project students, M.Sc. students, employees and guest must in addition submit the self declaration form. This will grant you access to your laboratory and keys to your office at the Department of Chemistry, building at Sem Sælands vei 26. You can edit this form after sending it in. Go to the "Nettskjema" front page, choose "My invitations and submissions" and the form you want to edit.

Fire Safety

Watch the video about Fire Safety (only in Norwegian but you can change subtitles to English). Locate your nearest emergency exit/fire alarm/extinguishing equipment etc.
Read the general fire instructions and find your floor contact(s). If the fire alarm goes off, you must leave the building.

Preparedness

Everyone must read the Emergency preparedness information available on the KI webpages. You should become familiar with "På den sikre siden".

Laboratory and field work

If you are going to work in a laboratory or are participating in field work, than your supervisor must inform you about mandatory HSE training for these tasks. For more information about mandatory HSE training see here.

Technical building challenges

Need to change a light bulb or other daily maintenance needs? Send a message to EA (Estate Department)

Asbestos

Many walls in the Chemistry building at Sem Sælands vei 26 contain asbestos, hence the following precautions should be followed:

  • It is prohibited to mount nails and screws in the walls.
  • It is prohibited to use pins, tape, post-it notes or tack-it on the walls.
  • It is prohibited to remove nails and screws in the walls.
  • Damages to the walls must be reported.
  • Asbestos in the walls is sealed by paint, hence poorly maintained walls should be reported.
  • When offices are vacant, painting should be considered.
  • Before installation screens, whiteboards etc. contact EA.

Heavy metals

Some old laboratory faucets may contain heavy metals. Water from these taps should not be consumed.

Ventilation

To maintain balanced and good ventilation, doors to laboratories should be kept closed. Open doors can affect the function of the fume hoods and result in chemical smells elsewhere in the building.

If there is a (chemical) smell in laboratories or offices, dry drain pipes can also be a cause. Let all water taps run for a minute or two to ensure that the sink's water trap is filled with water.

Temperature

Please keep the ventilation on the window sills open and do not cover them up. If there are problems with temperature in the laboratories or offices, take contact with the HMS coordinator or technical chief.

Responsibility

Leader is responsible for ensuring that information is given and procedures and regulations are followed.
