All laboratories at the Department of Chemistry should have established routines for handling and sorting of waste, including hazardous waste. These procedures should be prepared in consultation with the Department's HSE coordinator. The documents below provide some general rules and guidance.
Basic rules for waste management
- Hazardous waste guide (01/2023) - General guideline for handling of hazardous laboratory waste and residue chemicals
- Laboratory chemical waste flow chart (11/2021)
- Waste management procedures (02/2023)
Disposal of the yellow risk waste bins
Full risk waste bins can be places into Norsk Gjenvinning's "Mikjøsafe" which can be found in the chemistry backyard (grey orange metal container). The Miljøsafe can be opened with your office key. Please make sure that the yellow bins are closed properly and cannot open. New risk waste bins can be taken from the Central Storage.
Disposal of laboratory hazardous waste
Laboratory hazardous waste is supposed to be collected in the laboratories based on the Hazardous waste guide.
Most common waste fractions are halogenated and non-halogenated solvents, aqueous waste (acidic, neutral and basic), organic and inorganic solids. These waste fractions need to be collected separately.
For details, check the Hazardous waste guide. Use the labels below to identify and describe the waste. The main fractions of the waste should be listed on the labels. Disposal of chemicals in original packaging, please see "Disposal of residue chemicals" below.
Hazardous waste can be delivered every week:
When: every Tuesday, 10:00-11:45
Where: Central Storage
In 2024, there is no collection the following weeks: week 1, 12, 13, 19, 20, July, 51, 52
Disposal of residue chemicals
Generally, residue chemicals are collected twice a year, in May and November. If you need to hand-off chemical residues beforehand, please contact the HSE coordinator.
Follow the Form for the disposal of residue chemicals. A list over the disposed chemicals must be provided upon delivery to the HSE coordinator. Please place dirty chemical containers into a zip-log bag ("lynlåspose", available at the Central Storage).
