Invited talk: Jan Wohland

Title of talk: Climate risks of wind and solar energy in Europe

Future power systems will rely heavily on power generation from renewable sources. Renewable power generation relies on weather and climate. In the presentation, I will therefore address some of the risks for the energy system that stem from climate variability and climate change. These risks manifest in changing means and variability of renewable energy potentials. Focus will be given on planning timescales of multiple decades, and I will highlight risk mitigation strategies such as optimised capacity allocation and spatial smoothing. Overall, the talk will demonstrate the need for increased collaboration between energy and climate researchers to inform the swift transformation to net-zero emission energy systems.
