Njord Seminar with Eric Larose

Eric Larose (Université Grenoble Alpes): Environmental seismology : an emerging tool for probing slopes stability, rockfalls, and the evolution of the permafrost.

A poster for a Njord seminar showing presenter, title, date, Njord seal, and Zoom link.

Abstract:

Larose will give us an overview of different applications of ambient seismic noise to probe the change of elasticity (rigidity) of the soil, including landslides and rockslides, with the discovery of possible precursory signals. The seismic wavefields also allows to evaluate the develpomeent of damage of rocks (fracturation), giving possible new insights into erosion process. Ambient seismic noise also allows to track the evolution of the permafrost, including annual freeze-thaw cycles of the active part, together with the role of snow melt and water infiltration in the late spring.
