Art is Science and Science is Art

The cover of the April issue of Physics Today, features the graphical print by Ellen Karin Mæhlum, a piece she created through a collaboration with scientists at Njord.

In Physics Today (Volume 74, Issue 4, April 2021) Bjørn Jamtveit is interviewed about collaborations between scientist and artists. He explains that his ambition with engaging in collaborations with artists was to increase the chances of future funding by excelling in outreach, but he gained more than that:

"I've become a better observer because of my interactions with the artists"

The scientists at Njord have a long track record of inviting artists to collaborate and to give a new perspective on our research. In addition to collaborations with visual artists like Mæhlum, we have also collaborated with composer Natasha Barret. Together with Njord's Karen Mair, Barret made a walk-in installation that surrounded visitors with the sounds from cracking rocks.
