Every year, the Nature group releases a ranking that distinguishes the institutions that achieved the highest overall research output. For 2020, UiO is ranked number 8 in Europe (number 3 without UK) in the domain of Earth and Environmental Sciences. This ranking is calculated from a list of 91 articles published by UiO researchers in the best journals of the discipline in 2019.

Researchers from the Njord Centre at UiO contributed to ca. 25% of these high-profile articles thanks to the cross-disciplinary studies between geologists from the Department of Geosciences and physicists from the Center of Excellence Porelab and the Department of Physics.
