The Else-Ragnhild Neumann Award 2023 awarded to Sofia Kjellman

The prize 'Else-Ragnhild Neumann Award for Women in Geosciences' is awarded awarded to women who have made significant contributions to the field of geosciences. This year it goes to Sofia Kjellman from University of Tromsø.

'The Ragnhild Neumann Award for Women in Geosciences for 2023' goes to a woman who, through her Ph.D. or his work as a postdoctoral fellow has made a significant contribution to geotechnical research. The nominee should reside in Norway at the time of nomination. The award is named after Else-Ragnhild Neumann, Norway's first professor of geology.

The prize winner for 2023 is Sofia Elisabeth Kjellman, who works as a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Geosciences, UiT, the Arctic University of Norway. She took her doctorate at the same place in 2022, with the thesis "Holocene precipitation seasonality on Svalbard and in Northern Fennoscandia reconstructed using organic geochemical and stable isotope proxies". 

The jury justifies the award as follows: for her achievements in the field of geoscience. She has a total of 11 published papers, 3 of these as a first author. She is highly active in organizing workshops and other activities, showcasing her dedication and involvement in geosciences. In addition she is involved in science communication, emphasised by the award committee.

About the prize 'The Else-Ragnhild Neumann Award'

The Else-Ragnhild Neumann Award for Women in Geosciences goes to women who, through their research work as a Ph.D. or postdoctoral fellow has made a significant contribution within research in geosciences. The award consists of a diploma and an honorarium of NOK 50,000. The nominee should reside in Norway at the time of nomination

The Center for Planetary Habitability/PHAB in collaboration with the Department of Geosciences, University of Oslo is awarding the prize named after Else-Ragnhild Neumann, Norway's first female professor of geology. It was awarded for the first time at the symposium / 80th anniversary of Else-Ragnhild Neumann in 2018, and has been awarded annually thereafter.
