The steering board has an overall coordinating function with responsibility for:
- Overall plans, strategies, principles and priorities for the centre.
- Annual plan and budget of the centre.
- Ensuring that the centre's activities are well established at the participating units and at the faculty.

The board shall at least consist of: Research Dean (MN), head of department IFI, head of department IBV, head of department Pharmacy, and a representative of the Faculty of Medicine (all ex officio, the deputy heads are deputy representatives). The faculty, by the dean, may supplement the board with representatives of other participating units at UiO or other participating institutions at the request of the board. The chairman of the board is appointed by the dean on the advice of the board. The centre manager acts as the board's secretary, and the board reports to the faculty's management via the host institutes.
