To promote the use of hydrogen-based energy sources, the challenge of storing hydrogen needs to be resolved. Hydrogen liquefaction and compression are rather mature storage technologies. Furthermore, hydrogen storage in solid materials like metal hydrides is an attractive solution due to its compact and safe nature. High-entropy alloys (HEAs) have drawn attention because of their favorable kinetics and thermodynamics and higher volumetric capacities, which could be important for hydrogen storage. Nevertheless, even though they show potential, HEAs encounter obstacles such as underutilization of their hydrogen storage capabilities and limited reversibility at ambient conditions (close to room temperature and low pressures). Overcoming these difficulties is essential to harnessing the capabilities of HEAs in applications related to hydrogen storage.

This PhD project aims to fill gaps in our understanding and optimize hydrogen storage in HEAs. We will develop fundamental insight to improve hydrogen capacity, kinetics, and stability by tuning alloy compositions. In particular, the study intends to clarify why high-density hydrogen storage materials like TiVCrNb only utilize a fraction of their potential reversible hydrogen capacity, and we will focus on alloys that possess the intriguing H/M ratio of 2.5. Addressing these tasks could lead to advancements in hydrogen-powered energy systems by facilitating feasible storage techniques, thereby playing a role in the development of sustainable energy solutions.
