Sweden

Sweden has thirteen structures for which an impact origin is considered. Impact related research is being conducted at four universities (Stockholm-Technical University, universities of Luleå, Lund and Stockholm) ranging from impact related global extinctions and associated biological phenomena to impact crater structure based on geophysical modeling. Several of the universities cooperate in specific tasks like the exploration of impact fracturing in bedrock as a source for extraction of geothermal energy and the characteristics of impact generated brecciation and crater collapse. The increased meteorite influx during the Ordovician era is studied with respect to palaeoecology, oceanography and geochemistry.
